Zinc Supplement: Some Important Facts

Every cell in your body essentially requires zinc, yet your body is not able to manufacture it by itself. It follows naturally that it will be obtained from food, or from taking a zinc supplement.

Zinc, although only required in limited quantities, plays an important role in various body processes, including cell growth, supporting the immune system, tissues and joints. Research has also revealed that taking a zinc supplement can increase fertility in men and women, affecting the hormone levels in the latter. Additionally, it has been proven to assist in the healing process of skin wounds, hair health, and contribute to the recovery from skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis. In the case of acne treatment, particularly good results have been achieved by combining zinc and Vitamin A.

Your most basic senses - sight, smell, and taste, require zinc to be maintained. Research has shown that the loss of sight due to macular degeneration can be treated, and even be avoided altogether, by regularly taking a zinc supplement. Accordingly, a deficiency of zinc will result in the sense of smell and taste becoming dull, impairing the abilities. Additionally, a lack of zinc can lead to fertility problems, especially in men. Many older people tend to develop deficiencies, and require supplements.

Although required for complete functioning of the body, an overdose for extended periods can have a damaging effect on the immune system.

Zinc supplement products are available in many different forms, including zinc gluconate, acetate and citrate. At times, zinc may interfere with the absorption of copper into the body, especially when taken by itself. It is better to take a combination, but even better still to take it as part of a complete formula.

A word of caution, though. The U.S. supplement industry is unregulated, resulting in many substandard products. Always check for GMP compliance, to ensure that you are buying a product that really contains what it claims, and is free of contaminants. If not, you may end up taking harmful substances, or inadequate supplements, leaving you vulnerable to the very deficiencies you are trying to avoid.
